Few names carry extra weight in heavy steel than Ozzy Osbourne. However for DevilDriver and Coal Chamber vocalist Dez Fafara, there’s one frontman who sits even greater on the record: Pantera’s Phil Anselmo.

Throughout an look on the Garza Podcast with Suicide Silence guitarist Chris Garza, Fafara spoke at size about Anselmo, calling him the best frontman steel has ever produced.

“Phillip – for me – I’d say is the highest frontman on the planet, interval, finish of story,” Fafara says [via Ultimate Guitar]. “I like Ozzy, however I put him above Ozzy. That’s simply trigger…fuck, I don’t know, man. Plus, he’ll beat your fucking ass. He’s actual. He’s an actual fucking deal – Holyfield [referencing American boxer, Evander Holyfield].”

Fafara says Anselmo’s attraction goes far past his commanding stage presence, praising each his songwriting and Pantera’s enduring affect on heavy music.

“He’s an incredible frontman, wonderful author, and clearly one of many greatest bands on the planet. Influenced everyone. I don’t assume there’s anyone not influenced by Pantera. I want I’d have discovered him earlier, I’d have gotten influenced vocally. However that simply by no means occurred.”

Elsewhere within the dialog, Fafara reveals how an opportunity assembly with Anselmo on Melrose Avenue finally blossomed into a detailed friendship.

“I’ve a loopy story. Once I was in Coal Chamber, I used to be strolling down Melrose Ave. and Coal Chamber was nearly to get signed, and I noticed Phillip,” he says. “And I mentioned, ‘Hey man, I like your shit. I’m listening to your shit.’ And he put his luggage down, he’s like, ‘Cool, man.’ He signed one thing for me. I’m like, ‘Sooner or later, I’m going to tour with you.’ And he goes, ‘You already know what, man? Dangerous ass. I hope you’ll.’”

Only a 12 months later, that prediction got here true.

“We pull as much as a Pantera tour in my bus. No one’s on the bus however me. I hear the door knock and I reply it, and it’s Anselmo. And he goes, ‘Get your shit.’ I assumed it was getting kicked off the tour.”

“I’m like, ‘OK.’ I obtained my bag and I am going up on his bus. And he’s like, ‘That is my bunk, that’s your bunk beneath me. Throw your shit in – you’re dwelling with me.’ And that’s how we grew to become pals.”
